Living in Florida where there is an abundance of waterways, there is also an abundance of plastic waste. Using the printmaking process of the moveable collagraph, I hope to raise awareness as to how we are polluting our waterways with plastic. Over the past few years I have created a series of 16 collagraphs, where I recycle and incorporate discarded plastic such as food packaging, netting, rubber bands and fishing line into my prints.

I worked intuitively, placing plastic objects on my inked plate to create compositions where line and texture become the dominant elements. The deeply etched embossed lines are created by the depth of my objects and the pressure of the printing press. Creating a series has allowed me to develop a visual language, each print building upon another. I became more deliberate in the choices I made, and more aware of the repetition of my elements - the circles as orbs, the shapes resembling sea grass, and how the plastic elements could create patterns to represent debris floating in the ocean.

I have experienced much growth creating the Abundance of Plastic series. The creative process is always a journey.
